How EPF works

If your basic salary is up to ₹25,000 a month, EPF is compulsory (the wage ceiling went up from ₹15,000 on 17 September 2026). If you earn more, you can opt in. You and your employer each put in 12% of Basic + DA every month. This EPF calculator projects how much that adds up to by the time you retire.

Where the contributions go

ContributionPercentageGoes to
Employee12% of Basic+DA100% to EPF
Employer (EPF portion)3.67% of Basic+DAEPF account
Employer (EPS portion)8.33% of Basic+DA (max ₹2,083/month; ₹1,250 before 17 Sep 2026)Employee Pension Scheme

So on a basic of ₹25,000, you put in ₹3,000 a month. Your employer sends ₹2,083 to the pension scheme and ₹917 to your EPF account.

Tax treatment

  • Contributions: your own contribution qualifies for deduction under Section 80C, within the ₹1.5 lakh limit.
  • Interest: tax-free on up to ₹2.5 lakh of contributions a year (₹5 lakh if your employer doesn't contribute). Since FY 2021-22, interest on anything above that is taxable.
  • Withdrawal: tax-free after 5 years of continuous service. Withdraw earlier and the amount is taxable, with 10% TDS if it's ₹50,000 or more (20% if you haven't given your PAN).

সাধারণ প্রশ্নোত্তর

EPF is a savings account and EPS is a pension. Both are funded from your employer's 12% contribution. EPF (Employee Provident Fund) is your retirement savings and earns interest, currently 8.25%. EPS (Employee Pension Scheme) gets 8.33% of your pay out of the employer's share, capped at ₹2,083 a month since the wage ceiling rose to ₹25,000 on 17 September 2026 (₹1,250 before that). You get the EPF money back with interest when you retire. EPS pays a monthly pension (at least ₹1,000) once you've done 10 years of service.

Yes, partly. Under the EPF Scheme, 2026 (in force from 29 June 2026), once you've been a member for 12 months you can withdraw for illness, education, marriage, housing (buying, building or repairing a home, or repaying a home loan) and special circumstances. You have to leave 25% of your balance in the account. If you lose your job, you can take out 75% straight away and the rest after 12 months without work. If you withdraw within 5 years of continuous service, the amount is taxable and TDS may be deducted.

The quickest ways are the UMANG app or the EPFO member portal (passbook.epfindia.gov.in), where you log in with your UAN and password. You can also SMS EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899, give a missed call to 011-22901406 from your registered mobile, or visit an EPFO regional office. Link your UAN to Aadhaar and your bank account so claims go through smoothly.

VPF lets you put more than the compulsory 12% into your EPF account, up to 100% of Basic+DA. It earns the same rate as EPF (8.25%) and counts for 80C in the old tax regime. Unlike FD interest, the interest is tax-free as long as your own contributions (EPF plus VPF) stay within ₹2.5 lakh a year; interest on anything above that is taxed. The catch is that the money is locked till retirement, with limited partial withdrawals. Within that limit, a cautious investor in a high tax bracket gets an 8.25% tax-free return, which is hard to beat.
