What is a lumpsum investment?

A lumpsum investment is money you put in all at once instead of spreading it over months like a SIP. It might be a bonus, an inheritance, money from selling a plot or a maturing FD. That money then compounds for the whole period, which means each year's returns earn returns of their own. This lumpsum calculator shows how a one-time investment could grow, and what the final amount is really worth after inflation.

The formula

Future value = P × (1 + r)n
Value in today's money = future value ÷ (1 + i)n
Real return ≈ (1 + r) ÷ (1 + i) − 1

P is the amount invested, r the expected yearly return, n the number of years and i the inflation rate. Returns compound once a year, which is how mutual fund returns (CAGR) are usually quoted.

Worked example

You invest ₹1,00,000 once and expect 12% a year for 10 years:

  • Future value = 1,00,000 × 1.1210 = ₹3,10,585. That's a gain of ₹2,10,585, and your money has grown 3.11×.
  • With 6% inflation, that amount buys what ₹1,73,429 buys today. Your real return is about 5.66% a year.

How ₹1 lakh grows at different returns

Return per year5 years10 years20 years
7%₹1,40,255₹1,96,715₹3,86,968
10%₹1,61,051₹2,59,374₹6,72,750
12%₹1,76,234₹3,10,585₹9,64,629
15%₹2,01,136₹4,04,556₹16,36,654

Two things stand out. Time matters most: at 12%, staying in for 20 years instead of 10 triples the result. And small differences in return add up. Over 20 years, 15% gives nearly two and a half times what 10% does.

The rule of 72

Here's a quick mental check. Divide 72 by the yearly return to estimate how many years it takes to double your money. At 8% that's about 9 years; at 12%, about 6. The calculator shows the exact doubling time for your rate.

Lumpsum or SIP?

  • A lumpsum spends more time in the market, so it tends to earn more if markets rise steadily. The risk is that you buy everything at a high point.
  • A SIP averages your purchase price over time and suits a monthly salary.
  • If you have a large amount for equity funds and worry about timing, there's a common middle path. Park it in a liquid or debt fund and move it into equity in instalments over a few months. This is called a Systematic Transfer Plan (STP).

Keep in mind

  • Market-linked returns change from year to year and aren't guaranteed. The calculator assumes the same return every year.
  • Tax on gains isn't deducted. That means capital gains tax on mutual funds, or tax at your slab rate on FD interest. What you keep after tax will be lower.
  • For fixed deposits that compound quarterly, use our FD calculator to get the exact bank figures.

সাধারণ প্রশ্নোত্তর

With the compound interest formula: future value = P × (1 + r)^n. P is the amount invested, r the yearly return and n the number of years. For example, ₹1 lakh at 12% for 10 years grows to about ₹3.11 lakh.

About ₹1.97 lakh at 7% a year, ₹2.59 lakh at 10%, ₹3.11 lakh at 12% and ₹4.05 lakh at 15%. Real market returns vary and aren't guaranteed.

It's the future value adjusted for inflation, meaning what that future amount could buy at today's prices. ₹3.11 lakh in 10 years, with 6% inflation, has the buying power of about ₹1.73 lakh today.

Not always. A lumpsum stays invested longer and tends to do better when markets rise steadily, but you risk investing everything at a market high. A SIP spreads that risk and suits a monthly income. With a large amount, many investors use an STP to move it into equity bit by bit.

No. The values are before tax. Mutual fund gains attract capital gains tax when you redeem, and FD interest is taxed at your income-tax slab, so the amount you keep will be lower.
