What is a fixed deposit?

A fixed deposit (FD) is still the most popular way to save in India. You put a lump sum with a bank or post office for a fixed period, at an interest rate that's guaranteed from day one. A savings account pays around 3–4%; FDs pay 6–8% or more. Deposits are close to risk-free up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, because DICGC insures them. This FD calculator shows what your deposit will grow to by maturity.

The compound interest formula

A = P × (1 + r/n)n×t

A is the maturity amount, P the principal, r the yearly rate as a decimal, n the number of times interest is compounded each year, and t the number of years. So ₹1 lakh at 7% for 5 years, compounded quarterly, grows to about ₹1,41,478.

Key features

  • Guaranteed returns. The rate is locked when you open the FD, so market swings don't touch it.
  • Flexible tenure. Usually anything from 7 days to 10 years.
  • Premature withdrawal. Allowed, but with a penalty, usually a rate 0.5–1% lower.
  • Loan against FD. You can borrow up to 90% of the FD value without breaking it.
  • TDS. Banks deduct 10% TDS if interest goes over ₹50,000 a year (₹1 lakh for senior citizens), the limits since April 2025. If your income is below the taxable limit, submit Form 15G or 15H.

Senior citizen FDs

Most banks pay depositors over 60 an extra 0.25–0.75% a year. On a ₹10 lakh deposit over 5 years, that's ₹15,000–45,000 more.

Tax-saving FD

A 5-year tax-saving FD qualifies for deduction under Section 80C, up to ₹1.5 lakh a year. The interest is still taxable, but the amount you put in reduces your taxable income.

Yes. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct 10% TDS if interest goes over ₹50,000 a year (₹1 lakh for senior citizens) since April 2025. If your income is below the taxable limit, submit Form 15G (individuals) or Form 15H (seniors) to avoid TDS.

₹5 lakh per depositor per bank. That covers principal and interest across all your accounts in that bank. If you have ₹8 lakh in one bank and it fails, only ₹5 lakh is protected. Spread large deposits across banks, or use India Post, which is government-guaranteed with no cap.

Yes, at most banks, but you pay a penalty of 0.5–1% on the interest rate. Tax-saving FDs are the exception: they're locked in for 5 years and can't be broken early. Check your bank's terms before you open one.

Usually a small finance bank (SFB). SFBs pay more than large banks, and senior citizens get a little extra, but DICGC insurance still covers only ₹5 lakh per bank. Public sector banks like SBI and Bank of Baroda pay less. Rates change often, so compare the current rates on the banks' websites. India Post time deposits pay 6.9–7.5% (October–December 2026) with full government backing.

In a cumulative FD, interest compounds and is paid at maturity, so you get more because interest earns interest. In a non-cumulative FD, interest is paid out at regular intervals (monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly). Retirees who need a regular income usually pick that one.

Compound. Bank FDs usually compound quarterly, and so do Post Office FDs. The formula is A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t). This calculator lets you choose the compounding frequency, so you can compare offers like for like.
