How discounts really add up
Sale banners in Indian shops and shopping apps love stacked offers: "Flat 40% off + extra 10%", "50% + 20% on prepaid orders", "Buy now, ₹200 off with coupon". The headline numbers look like they add up, but they don't. The second discount is taken from the already reduced price, so "40% + 10%" is 46% off, not 50%. This calculator works out the final price, how much you save, and the true total discount, including any coupon and GST.
The formulas
Total discount % = 1 − (1 − d1) × (1 − d2), before the coupon
You save = original price − final price
Here d1 and d2 are the two discounts as fractions (40% = 0.40). The order of the two percentages does not matter: 40% then 10% gives the same price as 10% then 40%. A flat ₹ coupon is different: taken off last, as this calculator does, it saves its full value; taken off before a percentage discount, it saves less, because the percentage then applies to the coupon too.
Worked example
A pair of shoes has an MRP of ₹2,999. The offer is 40% off + 10% extra.
- After 40% off: 2,999 × 0.60 = ₹1,799.40
- After the extra 10%: 1,799.40 × 0.90 = ₹1,619.46
- You save ₹1,379.54, which is 46% of ₹2,999, not 50%.
With an additional ₹100 coupon, you pay ₹1,519.46 and the total discount rises to about 49.3%.
Stacked discounts at a glance
| Offer | Looks like | Actual discount |
|---|---|---|
| 20% + 10% | 30% | 28% |
| 30% + 20% | 50% | 44% |
| 40% + 10% | 50% | 46% |
| 50% + 20% | 70% | 60% |
| 60% + 10% | 70% | 64% |
Discounts and GST
For goods sold to consumers in India, the MRP already includes all taxes, so a discount on the MRP lowers what you pay, GST included. Choose "Price includes GST" to see how much of your final price is GST. For business purchases, services or quotes where prices are given before tax, choose "Add GST to the discounted price": GST is then charged on the reduced price, so the discount also saves you GST. A discount shown on the invoice at the time of sale reduces the value on which GST is charged.
Smart shopping tips
- Check the "original" price. A big percentage off an inflated MRP may still be more than the usual selling price. Compare with other sellers.
- Read the conditions. "Extra 10%" offers often have a cap (for example, up to ₹150) or need a specific card or minimum order value.
- Count delivery and convenience fees, which reduce the real saving on small orders.
- Compare per unit when pack sizes differ. Our unit price calculator shows which pack is cheaper per kg or litre.
