Why plan a trip budget?
Overspending on a holiday is one of the most common money regrets. A trip budget worked out before you leave tells you what to expect. It also helps you compare destinations, choose between budget and comfort options, and avoid coming home to a credit card bill you can't clear. Even a rough budget beats having none, and this trip budget calculator takes a couple of minutes.
Typical daily budgets for Indian destinations
| Destination | Budget/day per person | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Goa | ₹2,500 – ₹8,000 | Wide range; prices depend on the season |
| Rajasthan (Jaipur/Jodhpur) | ₹2,000 – ₹6,000 | Heritage hotels can be affordable |
| Kerala (Munnar/Alleppey) | ₹2,500 – ₹7,000 | Houseboat stays cost more |
| Leh-Ladakh | ₹3,000 – ₹8,000 | Transport and permits add up |
| Andaman Islands | ₹4,000 – ₹10,000 | Ferries are a big cost |
| Himachal (Manali/Kasol) | ₹1,800 – ₹5,000 | Cheap if you're flexible |
Ways to keep costs down
- Book trains at least 60 days ahead on IRCTC. Tatkal tickets add a charge of 10% of the base fare in second sitting and 30% in other classes, within fixed minimum and maximum amounts.
- Book flights 4–6 weeks ahead for domestic routes, and 2–3 months ahead for international ones.
- Flight + hotel combo deals on MakeMyTrip or Goibibo can save 15–25%.
- Eat at local restaurants and dhabas. The food is often better, and it costs 3–5x less than hotel restaurants.
- Keep a 10–15% buffer. Something unexpected always comes up: an extra auto ride, a pharmacy visit, tips.
- Note down what you spend each day in a notes app or Google Sheets so you can see if you're on track.
अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल
Transport (flights, trains or buses, plus local cabs and autos), accommodation (rate per night × nights), food (per day × days), sightseeing and activities (entry fees, tours), shopping and souvenirs, travel insurance, visa fees if you need a visa, and a buffer of 10–15% of the total. The calculator has a field for each of the main costs. Put insurance, visa fees and your buffer under Miscellaneous.
10–15% of your planned budget for a domestic trip, and 15–20% for an international one. It covers things like a missed flight, a medical problem, prices that turned out higher, or an activity you decide on the spot. Never travel with no buffer at all. Small problems turn into big stress very quickly.
Start with transport and stay. Book trains on IRCTC: Rajdhani and Shatabdi are fast, while Sleeper and 3AC balance comfort and cost. For flights, IndiGo and SpiceJet are the budget options, and booking 4–6 weeks ahead gets the best fares. Budget hotels or OYO properties cost ₹800–2,000 a night in most cities. Eat at local dhabas and restaurants, not hotel restaurants, and use city buses or the metro instead of cabs.
₹1,500–2,500 a day if you travel on a budget (hostel or budget hotel, local food, public transport). Mid-range is ₹3,000–6,000 a day (2–3 star hotel, restaurants, some cabs). A comfortable trip is ₹8,000–15,000 a day (4-star hotel, all meals out, Ola or Uber), and luxury starts around ₹20,000 a day. Rishikesh, Hampi and Jaisalmer are easy on the wallet. Leh-Ladakh and the Andaman Islands are expensive.
₹300–500 a day per person if you eat street food and at local restaurants. Sit-down restaurants and cafes come to ₹700–1,500 a day, and fine dining ₹2,000 or more. For a family, multiply the per-person figure, keeping in mind that children usually eat less. Abroad it costs a lot more: in Europe or the US, budget ₹3,000–8,000 a day per person for food alone.
