What is a recurring deposit?

A Recurring Deposit (RD) lets you put a fixed amount away every month and earn compound interest on it. It suits salaried people who don't have a lump sum to invest but want more than a savings account pays. Every bank offers RDs, and so does India Post. This RD calculator shows what your monthly deposits will add up to.

The RD interest formula

M = R × [(1 + i)n − 1] / (1 − (1 + i)−1/3)

Here M is the maturity value, R the monthly instalment, i the quarterly interest rate and n the number of quarters. Indian banks compound RD interest every quarter.

Key features

  • Minimum deposit: ₹100 a month at most banks and at India Post (in multiples of ₹10 there)
  • Tenure: 6 months to 10 years
  • Interest rates: usually the same as the FD rate for the same tenure, so check your bank's current rate
  • TDS: 10% is deducted if your total interest from the bank is more than ₹50,000 a year (₹1 lakh for senior citizens) since April 2025
  • Premature closure: allowed, with a small penalty

RD or SIP?

An RD protects your capital and pays a fixed return, so it suits people who don't want risk. A SIP (a systematic investment plan in a mutual fund) gives market-linked returns. Equity funds have returned 10–15% a year in the past, but with ups and downs along the way. For goals more than 5 years away, a SIP often does much better than an RD.
