What this PDF to Word converter does
This tool gets the text out of a PDF and puts it into an editable Word (.docx) file, so you can reuse a paragraph from a circular, edit an old agreement, or correct a letter you only have as a PDF. It runs entirely in your browser, and the document is never uploaded.
What it doesn't do is recreate the look of the PDF. Layout, fonts, bold and italics, colours, images and tables aren't kept, and headings come out as normal paragraphs. You get clean, editable text that you can format in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. A plain .txt download and a copy button are also available.
How the text is rebuilt
A PDF doesn't store lines or paragraphs. It stores small pieces of text, each drawn at an exact position on the page. The tool reads those pieces and puts the document back together:
2. Within a line, pieces are sorted left to right.
gap > 0.15 × font size → a space
gap > 2 × font size → a tab (a separate column)
3. A new paragraph starts when:
the space between lines is more than 1.45 × the usual line spacing,
the font size changes by more than 25%,
a line starts with a bullet or a number like "1." or "(a)", or
the previous line is short and ends a sentence.
Worked example. In a rent agreement typed in 12-point text, "Monthly rent" starts 50 points from the left edge and is about 66 points wide, so it ends near 116 points. "Rs 25,000" sits on the same baseline at 300 points. The gap of about 184 points is more than twice the font size (24 points), so the line becomes Monthly rent⇥Rs 25,000, with a tab between the two columns.
With Join lines into paragraphs switched on, the lines of a paragraph flow together as one paragraph, the way you would type it in Word. Switch it off to keep every line break exactly as in the PDF, which suits addresses, poems and lists.
Scanned PDFs: "No text found"
A scanned document or a PDF made from phone photos contains pictures of pages, not text. There is nothing to extract, so the tool says "No text found". Turning a picture of text into real text needs OCR (optical character recognition), which this tool doesn't do. If you have the original Word file, use that instead. Online OCR services can help, but remember they upload your document to someone else's server.
Hindi, Gujarati and other Indian languages
PDFs typed with Unicode fonts usually extract correctly in any Indian script. But many older Hindi and Marathi documents were typed with legacy fonts such as Kruti Dev, which store Devanagari letters as English character codes. Text from such PDFs comes out as gibberish in Latin letters, and has to be run through a font converter. Even with Unicode fonts, some vowel signs or conjuncts may come out in the wrong order, so proofread before you use the text.
Tips and limits
- Tables come out as lines of text with tabs between the columns. In Word you can select them and use Insert → Table → Convert Text to Table.
- Two-column pages (newspapers, research papers) are read straight across, line by line, so the two columns get mixed. Check those pages carefully.
- Headers, footers and page numbers repeat on every page as ordinary text; delete them in Word.
- A word split with a hyphen at the end of a line is joined back up, keeping the hyphen.
- Pages with no text (blank pages or scanned pages inside a typed document) are listed in a warning.
