How a jewellery bill is worked out
The price of a gold necklace, chain or bangle in India has three main parts: the value of the gold in it, the making charges for the craftsmanship, and GST. Stones, enamel or certification may be billed separately. This gold price calculator rebuilds the bill from the rate on the jeweller's board, so you can check an estimate or compare two shops. It doesn't show a live gold price, so enter today's rate yourself.
The formula
Making charges = % of gold value, or ₹ per gram × weight, or a flat amount
GST = 3% × (gold value + making charges + other charges)
Price = gold value + making + other charges + GST
If you only know the 24K rate, choose "24K (999) gold" and the calculator scales it by the purity: for 22K, rate × 916 ÷ 999. Many jewellers display their own 22K rate, which can differ slightly from this scaling; use their figure when they give one.
Purity and hallmark grades
| Caratage | Fineness (hallmark) | Gold content | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 999 / 995 | 99.9% / 99.5% | Coins and bars |
| 22K | 916 | 91.6% | Most plain gold jewellery |
| 18K | 750 | 75% | Diamond and studded jewellery |
| 14K | 585 | 58.5% | Lightweight and studded pieces |
BIS hallmarking also covers 20K (833) and 23K (958). A hallmarked piece carries the BIS logo, the purity grade (for example 22K916) and a 6-character alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number. You can check the HUID in the free BIS CARE app before paying. Hallmarking is compulsory for gold jewellery sold in the districts notified by the government, which as of March 2026 numbered 380.
GST on gold jewellery
Gold and articles of jewellery attract 3% GST: 1.5% CGST plus 1.5% SGST when the jeweller is in your state, or 3% IGST otherwise. When you buy a ready piece, the making charges are part of the price of the jewellery, so jewellers charge 3% on the gold value and the making charges together. If you give your own gold to a goldsmith and pay only for the work, that's a separate service with its own GST rate, and this calculator doesn't cover it.
Worked example
You buy a 22K chain weighing 10 grams. The board shows ₹1,00,000 per 10 g for 22K (an example figure, not today's rate), and the jeweller charges 12% making.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gold: 10 g × ₹10,000 per gram | ₹1,00,000 |
| Making charges: 12% of ₹1,00,000 | ₹12,000 |
| Taxable value | ₹1,12,000 |
| CGST 1.5% + SGST 1.5% | ₹3,360 |
| Total | ₹1,15,360 |
The all-in cost works out to ₹11,536 per gram, about 15% above the gold rate. When you sell or exchange the piece later, you're usually paid only for the gold in it. The making charges and GST don't come back.
Tips for buyers
- Compare making charges, not just the gold rate. Two shops with the same rate can differ by thousands of rupees on making charges.
- Check net weight. Stones should be weighed and priced separately, not charged at the gold rate.
- Ask for a proper invoice showing weight, purity, HUID, rate, making charges and GST. You'll need it for exchange, resale or insurance.
- Ask about exchange and buy-back terms. Deductions on old gold vary from shop to shop.
