The three parts of a retirement plan

  1. How much you need: the retirement corpus is your inflation-adjusted yearly expenses × the present value annuity factor for the years after you retire.
  2. What you already have: the future value of your current savings at the return you expect.
  3. The gap: the monthly SIP needed to build up the shortfall in the years left before retirement.

The 25x rule as a quick check

For a rough figure, aim to have 25× your yearly expenses saved by the time you retire. This comes from the 4% safe withdrawal rate: you can take out 4% of your corpus each year and it should last 30 years. Say your retirement expenses are ₹60,000 a month, or ₹7.2 lakh a year. You'd need at least ₹1.8 crore at today's prices, and more once inflation is added. The retirement planner above does that inflation maths for you.

Retirement corpus by lifestyle (in today's money)

LifestyleMonthly expensesCorpus needed (25× rule)
Frugal₹30,000₹90 lakh
Middle class₹60,000₹1.8 crore
Comfortable₹1,00,000₹3 crore
Affluent₹2,00,000₹6 crore

The number that matters most: real return

Real return is your investment return after inflation. If you earn 10% and inflation is 6%, your real return is about 3.77% (1.10 ÷ 1.06 − 1). That's how fast your corpus really grows once rising prices are taken into account. The calculator uses this rate to work out how the corpus runs down after you retire.

About 15% of your gross income, starting with your first job. That's a widely used rule. If you start late (after 35), raise it to 20–25%. The 25× rule says build up 25 times your expected yearly retirement expenses. Inflation makes the target bigger than it feels: ₹1 lakh of monthly expenses today becomes ₹3.2 lakh a month after 20 years at 6% inflation. Starting early lets compounding do most of the work.

6% for general expenses, which is roughly India's average CPI over the past decade. Use 8–10% for healthcare, because medical inflation keeps running higher. If your plan also covers your children's education, use 8% for that. Erring on the high side is safer: a higher estimate means you save more and are less likely to run out of money.

Only loosely. The 4% rule comes from the Trinity Study, which found a diversified portfolio could support 4% yearly withdrawals over 30 years. That work was based on US markets. India has higher inflation and a shorter market history, so 3–3.5% is a safer withdrawal rate here. In practice, keep 2–3 years of expenses in liquid assets (FDs, savings account) and invest the rest in a mix of equity and debt.

Yes. EPF, PPF, NPS and your other long-term savings all count towards your retirement corpus. Add up their current value and enter it in the 'Current savings / investments' field. The calculator projects how much they'll grow to, so the shortfall you see is realistic and not based on market investments alone.
