The four ways to use this percentage calculator

1. What is X% of Y?

This finds a percentage of a number. What is 15% of ₹2,500? It's 15/100 × 2,500 = ₹375. You'd use it for a discount, a tip or a GST amount.

2. X is what % of Y?

This tells you what share one number is of another. 45 marks out of 80 is 45/80 × 100 = 56.25%. Handy for test scores, or how much of a target you've reached.

3. Percentage change

% Change = (New Value − Old Value) / Old Value × 100

A positive answer is an increase and a negative one is a decrease. If a price goes from ₹200 to ₹250, that's (250−200)/200×100 = +25%, an increase.

4. Marks to percentage

Divide the marks you got by the maximum marks and multiply by 100. 435 out of 500 is 435/500 × 100 = 87%.

Quick reference

To findFormula
X% of Y(X ÷ 100) × Y
What % is X of Y(X ÷ Y) × 100
% Increase/Decrease((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100
Marks %(Obtained ÷ Total) × 100

Percentage is your own score; percentile is your rank against others. Percentage is your marks as a share of the total, × 100. Percentile tells you what percentage of test-takers scored below you. So 75% in an exam might put you at the 60th percentile if most students did well. Competitive exams like JEE, CAT and NEET report percentile, not percentage.

Multiply the price by the discount % and divide by 100; that's the discount. Take it off the original price to get what you pay. For 30% off ₹1,500, the discount is 0.30 × 1,500 = ₹450, so you pay ₹1,050. The calculator's 'X% of Y' mode does this directly.

Use the % Change mode. Enter your old salary as the Old value and your new salary as the New value. The formula is (New − Old) / Old × 100. If your salary went from ₹40,000 to ₹46,000, that's (46,000 − 40,000) / 40,000 × 100 = a 15% increase.

Usually 33–35% in school, and 40–50% in college. CBSE board exams need 33% (33 marks out of 100) in each subject, and most state boards need 35%. Undergraduate courses usually ask for 40–50% per subject, depending on the university. Some professional courses (medical, law) need 50% per subject plus an overall minimum. Check the rules of your own board or college.
