What is a SIP?

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) lets you put a fixed amount into a mutual fund every month. It's a bit like an RD, except the money goes into the stock or bond market. SIPs use rupee cost averaging: you buy more units when markets fall and fewer when they rise, which evens out the ups and downs over time. This SIP calculator shows what your monthly investment could grow to.

SIP returns formula

FV = P × [(1 + r)n − 1] / r × (1 + r)

FV = future value, P = monthly investment, r = monthly rate (annual ÷ 12 ÷ 100), n = total months.

Past returns as a reference (India)

Fund category10-year avg return
Large cap equity12–14% p.a.
Mid cap equity15–18% p.a.
Debt / liquid funds6–8% p.a.
Hybrid / balanced10–12% p.a.

Past returns don't guarantee future performance. Equity SIPs carry market risk.

The 15-15-15 rule

Invest ₹15,000 a month in equity SIPs at 15% a year for 15 years and you end up with roughly ₹1 crore. It's a handy way to see what steady, long-term investing can add up to.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल

10–12% a year for large-cap equity funds, 12–15% for mid-cap, and 6–7% for debt funds. These are historical averages and real returns will vary. Never treat an equity fund's return as guaranteed. For goals more than 7 years away, equity SIPs have historically beaten inflation.

Not in equity funds. Markets can swing a lot over 1–3 years, so for short-term goals use debt fund SIPs or recurring deposits instead. For 3–5 year goals, balanced or hybrid funds are a reasonable middle path.

Yes. Most fund houses let you pause a SIP for 1–3 months without any penalty, and you can stop (cancel) it whenever you like. The units you already hold stay invested and keep growing. Only the new instalments stop.

It's what happens when you invest the same amount every month. When markets fall, that amount buys more units at lower prices. When markets rise, it buys fewer units at higher prices. Over time this averages out your purchase cost, so the timing of any one month matters less.

No. SIPs in equity mutual funds don't guarantee returns, which depend on how the market does. That said, disciplined equity SIPs held for 10 years or more have rarely ended with a loss. The longer you stay invested, the more the swings even out.

A lump sum puts the whole amount in at once, so when you invest matters a lot. A SIP invests in regular instalments, so timing matters less thanks to rupee cost averaging. For most salaried people who don't have a large sum sitting idle, a SIP is the practical choice, and it's easier to stick with.
