What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)?

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a government savings scheme for the girl child, started under the "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" campaign. It pays one of the highest interest rates among small savings schemes, and it's fully tax-free under EEE. Many parents use it to save for a daughter's education and marriage. This Sukanya Samriddhi calculator shows what your deposits will grow to.

What SSY can add up to

Say you deposit ₹12,500 a month (₹1.5 lakh a year) from your daughter's birth for 15 years, ₹22.5 lakh in all. When the account matures 21 years later, it holds roughly ₹69 lakh at 8.2%, which is what the calculator shows. Put the full ₹1.5 lakh in at the start of each April instead and it comes to about ₹72 lakh. That's over 3× what you put in, and all of it is tax-free. It's enough to pay for higher education and a decent wedding.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल

Parents or legal guardians of a girl below 10 years of age. A family can have at most 2 accounts, one per girl child. The exception is twins or triplets born together, which allows a third account.

The account becomes inactive if the minimum ₹250 isn't deposited in a financial year. You can revive it by paying ₹250 (the minimum) plus a ₹50 penalty for each year you missed. This has to be done before maturity.

21 years after the account is opened, whatever the girl's age then. You only have to deposit for the first 15 years. For the remaining 6 years the balance keeps earning interest without new deposits.

Yes, once she turns 18 the account can be handed over to her. Until then, her parents or guardian run it.

Usually, yes. SSY pays 8.2% against PPF's 7.1%, and both are EEE tax-free. Both let you deposit up to ₹1.5 lakh a year. The main difference is that SSY is only for girls and matures at a fixed point 21 years after opening, while PPF has a 15-year lock-in that can be extended and can be used for any purpose.
