कसे वापरावे

  1. Choose your Gender.
  2. Enter your Height in centimetres, or switch to Feet + inches.
  3. You'll see the average of the Hamwi, Devine, Robinson and Miller formulas, the WHO healthy weight range and the lower range often advised for Indians. Each formula's figure is in the table below.
  4. Add your Current weight (optional) to see your BMI and how far you are from the healthy range.

Why there's more than one formula

Nobody agrees on a single "ideal" weight. The formulas were built at different times, for different groups of people, and each has its strengths. So this ideal weight calculator doesn't pick one. Looking at the range they give together is a fairer guide to a healthy target weight.

The four formulas

FormulaBase (5 ft / 152 cm) MenFor Each Extra Inch
Hamwi (1964)48 kg+2.7 kg
Devine (1974)50 kg+2.3 kg
Robinson (1983)52 kg+1.9 kg
Miller (1983)56.2 kg+1.41 kg

For women, the base values are 2.5–4.5 kg lower and the per-inch amounts the same or slightly smaller. Every formula adds weight for each inch above 5 feet (152 cm).

For a man 170 cm tall, Hamwi gives about 66.7 kg, Devine 65.9 kg, Robinson 65.2 kg and Miller 66.0 kg. The calculator shows their average, 65.9 kg, as the headline figure.

The BMI-based healthy range

The WHO puts a healthy BMI at 18.5–24.9 worldwide. For Asians, including Indians, the upper limit is often lowered to 22.9. The calculator shows the weight range for both (18.5–24.9 and 18.5–22.9) at your height. If you're Indian, the second one is the better target.

Limitations

  • None of the formulas look at muscle. A fit, muscular person can come out "overweight".
  • They don't account for frame size (small, medium or large build).
  • They ignore how body composition changes with age.
  • Use the numbers as a starting point for a talk with your doctor, not as a fixed goal.

नेहमी विचारले जाणारे प्रश्न

None of them is the most accurate for everyone, because each was developed for particular groups of people. Devine is the one most used in hospitals, for example to work out drug doses. For judging health risk, the BMI-based range is arguably the most useful (the calculator shows the WHO's 18.5–24.9 and the 18.5–22.9 often advised for Indians). Where the formulas agree gives you the fairest picture.

Not necessarily. The ideal weight range is a healthy zone, not one target. A weight where you feel good, perform well and can stay without strict dieting matters more than a specific number. Many people are healthiest somewhere in the middle of their range.

Probably because the classic formulas (Hamwi, Devine) were built in the 1960s–80s on Western populations, and they can underestimate ideal weight for taller people or those with a bigger frame. They work best at average heights of 165–175 cm. If you're 185 cm or taller, the BMI-based range may give you a more sensible target.

At a safe pace of 0.5–1 kg a week, which means eating 550–1,100 kcal a day less than you burn. Losing faster usually costs you muscle and is harder to keep up. To estimate the minimum number of weeks, divide the kilos you want to lose by 0.5–0.75. Losing 10 kg at 0.75 kg a week takes about 13–14 weeks. Habits you can keep matter more than speed.
