How many tiles do you need?
To work out how many tiles you need, find the area you want to cover, divide it by the area of one tile and add some extra for cuts and breakage. Shops sell tiles in whole boxes, so you then round up to full boxes. This tile calculator does each step and shows the working, for floors and for bathroom or kitchen walls.
The formula
Wall area = 2 × (length + breadth) × height − doors − windows
Tiles = area ÷ area of one tile × (1 + wastage %), rounded up
Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up
For walls, each door counts as 3 × 7 ft (0.9 × 2.1 m) and each window as 4 × 3 ft (1.2 × 0.9 m). If yours are very different, change the number of doors or windows so the area comes out about right.
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft bedroom floor with 600 × 600 mm vitrified tiles, 4 tiles per box, 10% wastage, at ₹55 per sq ft:
- Floor area: 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft (11.15 m²)
- One tile: 0.6 × 0.6 = 0.36 m² (3.875 sq ft)
- Exact tiles: 11.15 ÷ 0.36 = 30.97
- With 10% wastage: 34.06, so 35 tiles
- Boxes: 35 ÷ 4 = 8.75, so 9 boxes (36 tiles)
- Cost: 36 tiles × 3.875 sq ft = 139.5 sq ft × ₹55 = about ₹7,673
Common tile sizes in India
| Size sold as | Actual size | Area per tile | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 1 ft | 300 × 300 mm | 0.97 sq ft | Bathroom and balcony floors |
| 1 × 1.5 ft | 300 × 450 mm | 1.45 sq ft | Bathroom and kitchen walls |
| 1 × 2 ft | 300 × 600 mm | 1.94 sq ft | Walls, elevation |
| 2 × 2 ft | 600 × 600 mm | 3.88 sq ft | Living rooms and bedrooms |
| 2 × 4 ft | 600 × 1200 mm | 7.75 sq ft | Large rooms, fewer joints |
| 80 × 80 cm | 800 × 800 mm | 6.89 sq ft | Halls, showrooms |
Most "2 × 2 ft" tiles are really 600 × 600 mm, which covers 3.88 sq ft, not 4. Over a large floor that difference adds up, so go by the size printed on the box.
How much wastage to allow
- 5–10%: straight laying in a simple rectangular room
- 10–15%: rooms with many corners, pillars or cut-outs, and large-format tiles that are expensive to cut
- 15% or more: diagonal (45°) or herringbone patterns, where most border tiles are cut
Buying tips
- Buy all boxes at once, from the same batch. The shade and size code on the box should match, because tiles from different batches can differ slightly.
- Keep a few spare tiles after the job for future repairs. The same design may be discontinued later.
- Shops usually quote prices per sq ft but sell whole boxes. Your bill is the box coverage × the rate, not your room area × the rate.
- Budget separately for tile adhesive or cement mortar, grout, spacers, skirting and labour (often charged per sq ft).
- For skirting, multiply the room perimeter by the skirting height and add it to the area, or buy ready-made skirting pieces.
