What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) is a Systematic Investment Plan whose monthly amount goes up automatically once a year, either by a percentage or by a fixed rupee amount. Most mutual fund houses and investment apps let you set this up when you start the SIP. The thinking is that your income usually rises every year, so your investments should too. Even a small yearly increase makes a big difference over 15–20 years, because the extra money compounds as well. This step-up SIP calculator shows how big.
How it's calculated
We use the same monthly compounding as our SIP calculator. The monthly rate is the annual return ÷ 12, and each instalment goes in at the start of the month. Each year's 12 instalments are valued like a one-year SIP, and then grow for the years that are left.
SIP in year y (y = 0, 1, 2…): P × (1 + s)y or P + A × y
Value of one year's SIP at year-end = SIP × [(1 + r)12 − 1] × (1 + r) ÷ r
Final value = Σ year-end value × (1 + r)12 × (years left)
With a 0% step-up, the result matches a regular SIP. The calculator shows that flat SIP alongside so you can compare.
Worked example
You start a SIP of ₹10,000 a month, expect 12% a year, and invest for 15 years. A flat SIP grows to about ₹50.46 lakh on ₹18 lakh invested. If you raise the SIP by 10% every year, it reaches ₹37,975 a month in the 15th year, you invest ₹38.13 lakh in total, and the corpus grows to about ₹86.84 lakh.
| Yearly step-up | Total invested | Value after 15 years (12%) |
|---|---|---|
| 0% (flat SIP) | ₹18,00,000 | ₹50,45,760 |
| 5% | ₹25,89,428 | ₹65,30,752 |
| 10% | ₹38,12,698 | ₹86,83,849 |
| 15% | ₹57,09,649 | ₹1,18,35,225 |
Starting with ₹10,000 a month in every row, the step-up alone takes the corpus from about ₹50 lakh to well over ₹1 crore.
Percentage or fixed amount?
- Percentage step-up keeps pace with salary growth, and the increases themselves grow over time. Matching it to your expected yearly raise (say 5–10%) is a common approach.
- Fixed-amount step-up (for example, ₹1,000 more every year) is gentler and easier to plan for. Its effect is smaller in later years, because the increase stays the same while the SIP gets bigger.
Tips
- Set the step-up when you start the SIP so it happens on its own. That's easier than remembering to raise it yourself.
- Some fund houses cap the step-up amount or percentage, or offer only certain options (yearly or half-yearly). Check what your platform allows.
- Choose a step-up you can keep up. If your income falls, you can usually pause or reduce the SIP.
- The returns here are assumptions. Equity fund returns vary from year to year and aren't guaranteed, so plan with a cautious rate.
