How the period calculator works
A menstrual cycle runs from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. The period calculator keeps adding your average cycle length to predict the dates of your next periods. Each period's end date is its start date plus the period duration, minus 1.
What's a normal menstrual cycle?
| Parameter | Normal Range | Average |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle length | 21–35 days | 28 days |
| Period duration | 2–7 days | 5 days |
| Blood loss | 30–80 ml | ~40 ml |
When to see a doctor
- Your cycles are regularly shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days
- Periods last more than 7 days, or the flow is very heavy (soaking more than 1 pad an hour)

- The pain is bad enough to stop you going about your day
- You have spotting between periods
What can make cycles irregular
- Stress and big changes in routine
- A large weight gain or loss
- PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), the most common hormonal disorder
- Thyroid problems (hypo- or hyperthyroidism)
- Starting, stopping or changing hormonal contraception
తరచుగా అడిగే ప్రశ్నలు
Within about 1–3 days if your cycles are regular. If they vary by more than 7 days, the dates become much less reliable. The calculator assumes every future cycle will be the length you enter, and stress, illness, travel and hormonal changes can all move a period.
PMS (premenstrual syndrome) is a set of symptoms in the days before a period, during the luteal phase, typically 7–14 days before it starts. Common symptoms are mood changes, bloating, sore breasts, tiredness and food cravings. For most women it begins 7–10 days before the next period. A severe form is called PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). If symptoms seriously disrupt your daily life, see a gynaecologist.
Yes. Some hormonal contraceptives let you skip or delay periods. Extended-cycle pills, taken continuously for 3 months, cut periods to 4 a year. Hormonal IUDs can make periods much lighter or stop them. NuvaRing and contraceptive patches can also be used in extended cycles. Talk to your doctor about what suits you.
Amenorrhea is the medical name for missed periods when you aren't pregnant. Primary amenorrhea means never having had a period by age 15–16. Secondary amenorrhea means missing 3 or more periods in a row after having regular cycles. Common causes are pregnancy (always test first), stress, very heavy exercise, a lot of weight loss, PCOS, thyroid disorders and early menopause. See a doctor if you miss 3 or more periods.
