What this running pace calculator does
Pace is the time it takes you to cover one kilometre (or one mile). It's the number runners in India talk about most, from the Sunday 5K in Cubbon Park to marathon training for Mumbai in January. This running pace calculator takes any two of distance, time and pace and works out the third. It also gives your speed, a split for every km or mile, and a predicted finish time for the 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon.
The basic formulas
Time = pace × distance
Distance = time ÷ pace
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace in minutes per km
Worked example: a 10K in 55 minutes is 3,300 seconds ÷ 10 km = 330 seconds, or 5:30 per km. That's 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.91 km/h. One mile is exactly 1.609344 km, so the same run is 8:51 per mile.
Predicting your race times
To predict a time at another distance, the tool uses a formula published by the American engineer and runner Peter Riegel in 1981:
The exponent 1.06 captures the fact that you slow down a little as the distance grows. From a 25-minute 5K, the prediction for 10K is 1,500 × 2^1.06 = about 3,127 seconds, or 52:07. From the 55-minute 10K above, the predictions are about 2:01:21 for a half marathon and 4:13:01 for a marathon.
Riegel built the formula from efforts lasting roughly 3.5 minutes to just under 4 hours, so it works best inside that range. It also assumes you've trained for the longer distance. If your longest run is 12 km, a marathon prediction from your 10K will be too optimistic.
Common race paces
| Pace per km | 5K | 10K | Half marathon | Marathon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:30 | 22:30 | 45:00 | 1:34:56 | 3:09:53 |
| 5:00 | 25:00 | 50:00 | 1:45:29 | 3:30:59 |
| 5:30 | 27:30 | 55:00 | 1:56:02 | 3:52:04 |
| 6:00 | 30:00 | 1:00:00 | 2:06:35 | 4:13:10 |
| 7:00 | 35:00 | 1:10:00 | 2:27:41 | 4:55:22 |
These are even-pace times (pace × distance), not predictions. They're handy for picking a pacer group or setting your watch.
Using splits on race day
The split table shows your total time at each km marker. Most runners do best with even splits, or a slightly faster second half. Starting 15 to 20 seconds per km too fast feels easy in the first 5 km and costs far more later. In Indian races that start early to beat the heat, the sun still comes up during the second half, so build in a small buffer.
GPS watches often measure a race as a little longer than the official distance, because you rarely run the shortest line through every turn. Trust the course markers over your watch.
