What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest just to keep you alive: breathing, blood circulation, temperature control and making new cells. Think of it as the energy you'd need if you lay still all day and did nothing. This BMR calculator works it out from your age, gender, height and weight.

BMR, TDEE and calorie targets

TermMeaningUse case
BMRCalories at complete restBaseline for all calculations
TDEEBMR × activity multiplierDaily calories to maintain weight
DeficitTDEE − 500 kcalLose ~0.5 kg/week
SurplusTDEE + 300–500 kcalBuild muscle / gain weight

The Mifflin-St Jeor formula

Men: BMR = (10 × kg) + (6.25 × cm) − (5 × age) + 5
Women: BMR = (10 × kg) + (6.25 × cm) − (5 × age) − 161

Clinical studies have found it the most accurate formula for the general population. Take a 30-year-old man who weighs 70 kg and is 170 cm tall: 700 + 1,062.5 − 150 + 5 = about 1,618 kcal a day. The calculator also shows the older Harris-Benedict formula (as revised in 1984) for comparison. It often comes out a little higher.

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is what you burn at complete rest, on things like breathing, circulation and cell repair. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is BMR multiplied by your activity factor, so it's what you actually need each day to keep your weight steady. Eat less than your TDEE to lose weight and more to gain.

No. BMR is one part of it. Your total burn is BMR plus the thermic effect of food (digesting food uses about 10% of the calories you eat), plus exercise, plus everyday movement like standing, walking and fidgeting (called NEAT). BMR is usually 60–70% of the total.

Because you lose muscle. BMR drops by roughly 1–2% per decade after 30, mostly because muscle mass declines with age (sarcopenia), and muscle burns more energy than fat. Regular strength training is the best way to hold on to it.

Yes, by building muscle with resistance training. At rest, muscle burns about 13 kcal per kg a day against about 4.5 kcal per kg for fat. Eating enough protein also raises the thermic effect of food. Crash diets do the opposite: they lower BMR as the body adapts. Don't eat below 1,200 kcal (women) or 1,500 kcal (men) for long.
