ఎలా ఉపయోగించాలి
- The list starts with common appliances. For each, set the watts, how many you have (×) and the hours it runs a day. Remove what you don't have with ✕, and add more from the list with Add.
- The fridge is set to 8 hours a day, not 24: it stays plugged in all day, but its compressor switches on and off and runs for about a third of the time.
- Enter your Tariff in ₹ per unit (kWh) from your last bill, any Fixed charges, and whether you're billed monthly or every 2 months.
- The bill, units used, cost a day and cost a year update as you type. Each row shows its own units and cost.
- The Where your units go table ranks your appliances, so you can see which one to cut back on. Use pdf or copy result to keep the estimate.
How electricity use is measured
Electricity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), which your bill calls "units". One unit is the energy a 1,000-watt appliance uses in one hour. You pay per unit, and in most states the rate goes up in slabs as you use more. This electricity bill calculator adds up what each appliance in your home uses in a month.
Typical appliance wattages
| Appliance | Typical wattage | Units/day (4h use) |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5-ton 5-star inverter AC | about 1,200 W on average | 4.8 units |
| Ceiling fan | 60 W | 0.24 units |
| LED bulb (10W) | 10 W | 0.04 units |
| Refrigerator | 150 W | about 1.2 units a day (the compressor runs about 8 of the 24 hours) |
| Washing machine | 800 W | 0.8 units/cycle |
| Geyser (water heater) | 2,000 W | 1.0 unit (0.5h) |
| Laptop | 60 W | 0.24 units |
| 32-inch LED TV | 70 W | 0.28 units |
How Indian tariffs work
Most state DISCOMs charge in slabs: a lower rate for the first 100 units and higher rates after that. A rough example: ₹3.5/unit for 0–100 units, ₹5.5/unit for 101–300 units and ₹7.5/unit above 300 units. Fixed charges (₹50–200 a month) and taxes come on top. This calculator uses one flat rate, so for the closest estimate, divide your last bill's total by the units it shows and enter that.
Ways to cut your bill
- Buy BEE 5-star ACs and refrigerators. They use 20–30% less power.
- Keep the AC at 24°C. Each degree lower adds about 6% to its energy use.
- Switch every bulb to LED. A 9W LED gives the same light as a 60W incandescent bulb.
- Put the geyser on a timer. Switching it on 30 minutes before you need it is enough.
- Unplug chargers and switch TVs off at the wall. Standby power can be 5–10% of a bill.
