How is Electricity Consumption Measured?
Electricity consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), commonly called "units." One unit = energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for 1 hour. Your electricity bill charges you per unit consumed, often on a progressive slab system.
Typical Appliance Wattages
| Appliance | Typical Wattage | Units/Day (4h use) |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5-ton 5-star AC | 1,200 W | 4.8 units |
| Ceiling fan | 60 W | 0.24 units |
| LED bulb (10W) | 10 W | 0.04 units |
| Refrigerator | 150 W | 1.2 units (24h run) |
| Washing machine | 800 W | 0.8 units/cycle |
| Geyser (water heater) | 2,000 W | 1.0 unit (0.5h) |
| Laptop | 60 W | 0.24 units |
| 32-inch LED TV | 70 W | 0.28 units |
Indian Electricity Tariff Structure
Most state DISCOMs use progressive slabs (lower rate for first 100 units, higher rates for excess). Example (approximate): 0–100 units: ₹3.5/unit; 101–300 units: ₹5.5/unit; above 300 units: ₹7.5/unit. Fixed charges (₹50–200/month) and taxes are additional. Our calculator uses a flat rate — enter your effective rate from your actual bill for the most accuracy.
Top Ways to Save on Your Bill
- Upgrade to BEE 5-star rated AC and refrigerator — they use 20–30% less power.
- Set AC temperature to 24°C — each degree lower adds ~6% to your AC's energy use.
- Replace all bulbs with LED — a 9W LED replaces a 60W incandescent.
- Use the geyser timer — avoid running it all day; 30 minutes before use is enough.
- Unplug chargers and TVs when not in use — standby power can account for 5–10% of a bill.
