How to Use

  1. Add each appliance using the Add Appliance button. Enter the appliance name, wattage (W), and average daily usage hours.
  2. Set the number of days per month the appliance is used (default 30).
  3. Enter your local electricity tariff in ₹/kWh (units). Check your last bill or your state DISCOM's website.
  4. Click Calculate to see monthly units consumed and estimated bill for each appliance and in total.
  5. The appliance breakdown table shows which devices consume the most — helping you identify savings opportunities.

How is Electricity Consumption Measured?

Electricity consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), commonly called "units." One unit = energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for 1 hour. Your electricity bill charges you per unit consumed, often on a progressive slab system.

Typical Appliance Wattages

ApplianceTypical WattageUnits/Day (4h use)

Ceiling fan60 W0.24 units

Indian Electricity Tariff Structure

Most state DISCOMs use progressive slabs (lower rate for first 100 units, higher rates for excess). Example (approximate): 0–100 units: ₹3.5/unit; 101–300 units: ₹5.5/unit; above 300 units: ₹7.5/unit. Fixed charges (₹50–200/month) and taxes are additional. Our calculator uses a flat rate — enter your effective rate from your actual bill for the most accuracy.

Top Ways to Save on Your Bill

  • Upgrade to BEE 5-star rated AC and refrigerator — they use 20–30% less power.
  • Set AC temperature to 24°C — each degree lower adds ~6% to your AC's energy use.
  • Replace all bulbs with LED — a 9W LED replaces a 60W incandescent.
  • Use the geyser timer — avoid running it all day; 30 minutes before use is enough.
  • Unplug chargers and TVs when not in use — standby power can account for 5–10% of a bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your bill = Total units consumed (kWh) × applicable tariff slab rate + fixed charges + taxes. The 'units' consumed = appliance wattage ÷ 1000 × hours used × days. For example, a 1000W AC running 8 hours/day for 30 days = 240 units. Our calculator sums up all your appliances to give total monthly consumption and estimated cost.

One unit of electricity = 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) = the energy consumed by a 1,000-watt appliance running for 1 hour. Examples: a 100W bulb for 10 hours = 1 unit; a 5-star 1.5-ton AC (1,500W) for 1 hour ≈ 1.5 units; a laptop (50W) for 8 hours = 0.4 units.

Rates vary significantly by state and slab. Typical residential rates: ₹3–5/unit for first 100 units, ₹5–7/unit for 100–300 units, ₹7–10/unit above 300 units. States like Delhi, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu have different slabs. Our calculator uses ₹7/unit as a default average — adjust to your local DISCOM's rate for accurate results.

High consumption: Air conditioner (1,000–2,000W), water heater/geyser (1,500–3,000W), refrigerator (150–400W, 24/7). Medium: washing machine (500–1,000W per cycle), microwave (800–1,200W). Low: LED bulb (5–10W), ceiling fan (50–75W), laptop (40–80W). Replacing ACs and geysers with 5-star rated models can cut bills by 20–30%.

Use 5-star BEE-rated appliances, especially AC and refrigerator. Set AC to 24°C (each degree below costs ~6% more). Use LED bulbs throughout. Avoid standby mode (TVs, chargers left plugged in waste 5–10% energy). Wash clothes in cold water. Consider solar panels if consumption exceeds 300 units/month.
