Post Office Time Deposit account

The Post Office Time Deposit (POTD) is India Post's version of a bank FD. It's backed by the government, which makes it safer than even the largest private banks. With more than 1.5 lakh post offices across India, it's especially easy to open in rural and semi-urban areas. This post office time deposit calculator shows what your deposit will be worth at maturity.

POTD vs bank FD

  • TDS works the same way for both: 10% is deducted once the year's interest goes above ₹50,000 (₹1 lakh for senior citizens), the limits since April 2025.
  • The 5-year POTD qualifies for 80C. Among bank FDs, only the 5-year tax-saving FD does.
  • Premature closure is allowed after 6 months. Close before 1 year and you get the post office savings account rate. Close after that and the completed years earn 2% less than the TD rate for that period. A 5-year TD opened on or after 10 November 2023 can't be closed before 4 years.
