How to Use

  1. Tap what you want to convert: Length, Weight, Temperature, Area, Volume, Speed, Data storage, Time or Pressure.
  2. Type the Value. Commas are fine, and temperatures can be negative.
  3. Choose the From and To units. Tap Swap units to convert the other way.
  4. The answer appears as you type, along with what 1 unit of each equals.
  5. Scroll down for the value in every unit of that category, or tap copy result.

One converter for everyday units

India uses the metric system officially. Daily life still mixes in other units: height in feet and inches, screen sizes in inches, gold in tola, tyre pressure in psi, and recipes from abroad in cups and ounces. This converter covers nine kinds of measurement. It uses the exact legal definitions wherever one exists. For example, 1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm and 1 pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg under the 1959 international yard and pound agreement.

How it converts

Every unit is stored as a multiple of one base unit (metre, kilogram, square metre, litre, metre per second, byte, second or pascal). A conversion multiplies by the "from" size and divides by the "to" size:

result = value × (base units in 1 "from" unit) ÷ (base units in 1 "to" unit)

Temperature is different, because the scales start at different zero points:

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32   |   °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9   |   K = °C + 273.15

Example: a fever of 101 °F is (101 − 32) × 5/9 = 38.3 °C. A 5 ft 8 in person is 68 × 2.54 = 172.72 cm.

Traditional Indian units

UnitValueWhere you'll meet it
Tola11.6638 g (180 grains)Gold and silver. Gold prices are now usually quoted per 10 g, which some people loosely call a tola.
Masha1/12 tola = 0.972 gOld jewellery and Ayurvedic measures
Ratti1/96 tola = 0.1215 g (8 ratti = 1 masha)Old jewellery weights
Quintal100 kgCrop prices and MSP (₹ per quintal)
Gaj (square yard)9 sq ftPlot sizes in north India
Cent, guntha435.6 and 1,089 sq ftLand in the south and west

Gem sellers use a different "ratti" of roughly 0.18 g (about 0.9 carat). It is not standardised, so the converter does not include it. Use carats (1 carat = 200 mg exactly) for gemstones.

Why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB

Storage makers use decimal units: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows counts in binary units, where 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, but still labels them "GB". So 1 TB = 1012 bytes shows as 931.32 "GB". Nothing is missing. Internet speeds are in bits: a 100 Mbps plan moves at most 12.5 megabytes per second.

Good to know

  • Cups: a US cup is 236.6 ml and a metric cup is 250 ml. Check which cup a recipe was written for.
  • Gallons: a US gallon (3.785 L) is smaller than a UK gallon (4.546 L).
  • Tyre pressure: 32 psi is about 2.21 bar or 220.6 kPa.
  • Month and year in the time category are calendar averages (30.44 and 365.2425 days). For real dates, use a date calculator instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 tola is 11.6638 grams (180 grains). Gold prices in India are usually quoted per 10 grams, which some people loosely call a tola, so check which one a price refers to.

Multiply the total inches by 2.54. For 5 ft 6 in: 5 × 12 + 6 = 66 inches, and 66 × 2.54 = 167.64 cm. To go the other way, divide centimetres by 2.54.

100 °F is (100 − 32) × 5/9 = 37.8 °C. Normal body temperature is about 37 °C, or 98.6 °F.

Both are in use. In decimal (SI) units, 1 GB = 1000 MB, which storage makers and telecom plans use. In binary units, 1 GiB = 1024 MiB, which Windows and RAM sizes use, even though Windows labels it GB.

A US gallon is 3.785 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres. Fuel economy figures from the US use the US gallon.

1 quintal is 100 kg, and 10 quintals make 1 tonne. Crop prices and MSP in India are quoted in rupees per quintal.
