How to Use

  1. Fill in Your business (received by): name, address and GSTIN if you have one. Tick Remember my business details on this device to keep them.
  2. Under Received from, add the payer's name, and their address if you want it on the receipt.
  3. Set the receipt number and date, then under Payment enter the amount (the words are filled in for you) and how it was paid: cash, UPI, cheque with its number and bank, NEFT, IMPS, RTGS or card with the reference number.
  4. Add what the payment is towards, the invoice it settles and any balance due. For cash above ₹5,000, keep the box for a ₹1 revenue stamp ticked.
  5. Check the preview, then Download PDF or Print. Sign it (across the revenue stamp for cash) and hand it over.

What a payment receipt proves

A payment receipt is your written acknowledgement that you've been paid. The payer keeps it as proof, and you keep a copy to match against your bank and cash book. Shops, contractors, tutors, clinics, societies and freelancers in India use them every day, especially for cash and for part payments against a bill. This payment receipt generator makes a one-page A4 receipt with the amount in figures and in words, the payment mode and reference, the invoice it settles, any balance still due, and a "received by" signature line.

What goes on the receipt

The amount in words uses the Indian system (thousand, lakh, crore) with paise where there are any, so ₹1,049.50 prints as "Rupees One Thousand Forty Nine and Fifty Paise Only". Writing the amount both ways makes it hard to alter.

The ₹1 revenue stamp

Under the Indian Stamp Act, 1899 (Schedule I, Article 53), a receipt for more than ₹5,000 carries stamp duty of ₹1. The limit was raised to ₹5,000 by the Finance (No. 2) Act, 2004. In practice the stamp is insisted on for cash, because UPI, bank transfers and cheques leave their own trail. So this tool adds a box for the stamp on cash receipts above ₹5,000, and lets you add it to other receipts too if your customer asks. Buy the stamp at a post office, stick it in the box and sign across it.

₹5,000 in cash: no stamp needed
More than ₹5,000 in cash (say ₹5,001): ₹1 revenue stamp, signed across

Limits on cash

Income-tax law bars anyone from receiving ₹2 lakh or more in cash from one person in a day, for a single transaction, or for one event or occasion. This was section 269ST of the Income-tax Act, 1961 and continues under the Income-tax Act, 2025 from 1 April 2026. The penalty can equal the amount received. A receipt doesn't make such a payment legal, so ask for larger amounts by UPI, cheque or bank transfer.

Receipts and GST

A payment receipt is not a tax invoice and doesn't charge GST. If you are registered under GST:

  • For a sale already billed, the tax invoice carries the GST. The receipt only records that the money came in.
  • If you receive an advance for services before billing, GST is due on it and the CGST Rules (rule 50) ask for a receipt voucher showing the tax. This tool doesn't make receipt vouchers; ask your CA.
  • Advances for goods don't attract GST for regular taxpayers (Notification 66/2017-Central Tax).

Tips

  • Number receipts in their own series and never reuse a number.
  • For a cheque, write "cheque subject to realisation" in the notes, since the money isn't yours until it clears.
  • Never write a full card number on a receipt. The approval code or last four digits is enough, and the tool warns you if it sees a full number.
  • For rent, use our Rent Receipt Generator, which adds the landlord's PAN for HRA claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it is for more than ₹5,000. Article 53 of the Indian Stamp Act charges ₹1 stamp duty on such receipts, and it is usually insisted on for cash payments. The tool adds a box for the stamp on cash receipts above ₹5,000; sign across the stamp once it is stuck on.

No. An invoice asks for payment and, for a GST-registered seller, charges GST. A receipt confirms that payment was received. You can issue a receipt against an invoice and mention the invoice number on it.

In the Indian system, ending with "Only": ₹1,25,000 is "Rupees One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand Only". The tool writes it for you, including paise, as soon as you type the amount.

No. Income-tax law bars receiving ₹2 lakh or more in cash from one person in a day, for one transaction or for one event, and the penalty can equal the amount. Take larger payments by UPI, cheque or bank transfer.

For a cheque: the 6-digit cheque number, the bank and, if you like, the cheque date. For UPI, NEFT, IMPS or RTGS: the reference or UTR number from the payment message. The tool prints these under Payment details.
