What is NSC?
National Savings Certificates (NSC) are government-backed savings bonds available at India Post offices and select banks. They offer guaranteed returns, 80C tax deduction on the principal invested, and are considered one of the safest fixed-income investments in India.
Current Terms (2025)
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Interest Rate | 7.7% p.a. (compounded annually, paid at maturity) |
| Tenure | 5 years |
| Minimum Investment | ₹1,000 (no maximum limit) |
| Tax Deduction | Section 80C (up to ₹1.5 lakh) |
| TDS | No TDS deducted |
NSC Interest Taxation
NSC interest is reinvested automatically each year and qualifies for 80C deduction in years 1–4. However, the interest accrued in year 5 (which is paid out at maturity) is taxable as "Income from Other Sources." Net after-tax returns are still attractive compared to bank FDs for taxpayers in the 10–20% bracket.
NSC as Loan Collateral
NSC certificates can be pledged as collateral for bank loans — a useful feature for small business owners who need working capital without breaking their savings.
