How Ovulation Works

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary. It typically occurs 14 days before the next period, regardless of cycle length. So for a 28-day cycle, ovulation is around day 14; for a 35-day cycle, around day 21.

The Fertile Window

The fertile window is the period during which sex can result in pregnancy. It spans 5 days before ovulation + the day of ovulation + 1 day after (7 days total). Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days, so intercourse before ovulation can still result in conception.

Signs of Ovulation

  • Cervical mucus change: Becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy (like raw egg white) — the most reliable natural sign.
  • Basal body temperature (BBT): Rises slightly (0.2–0.5°C) after ovulation and stays elevated until next period.
  • Ovulation pain (Mittelschmerz): Mild one-sided pelvic cramping felt by about 20% of women.
  • LH surge: Detectable with ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) 24–36 hours before ovulation.

This calculator is for informational purposes only and assumes regular cycles. Irregular cycles, PCOS, thyroid issues, and other factors can affect ovulation timing significantly. Always consult a gynaecologist for fertility-related decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is very unlikely but not impossible. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract, so sex before the fertile window can sometimes result in conception if ovulation occurs earlier than predicted. Ovulation can vary cycle to cycle, especially with stress, illness, or travel. For contraception, calendar methods alone are unreliable.

The calculator assumes regular cycles. With irregular cycles (varying by more than 7 days), predicting ovulation by calendar is unreliable. Better alternatives: ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) which detect the LH surge 24–36 hours before ovulation, basal body temperature (BBT) charting, or fertility monitors. Consult a gynaecologist if cycles are consistently irregular.

Yes — psychological and physical stress activates the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis, which can suppress the hormonal cascade required for ovulation. Common triggers: illness, extreme exercise, significant weight change, sleep deprivation, and emotional stress. Delayed or missed ovulation will shift all subsequent cycle dates accordingly.

The calendar/rhythm method has a typical-use failure rate of 12–24% per year — much higher than barrier methods or hormonal contraception. It is not recommended as a sole contraceptive method. The fertile window estimated here is an approximation. For family planning, consult a doctor about appropriate contraceptive options.
