How to Use

  1. Type or paste a page title into Title or text. For many slugs at once, put one title on each line. Try a sample fills in three titles.
  2. Choose the Separator: hyphen (best for web pages) or underscore.
  3. Adjust the options: Lowercase, Convert accents (é → e) and Remove stop words such as “a”, “the” and “of”.
  4. If you want, set a Maximum length. The slug is cut at a whole word, so it never ends halfway through one.
  5. The slug appears straight away with its length and an example URL. Click Copy slug (or Copy all slugs for a list).

What is a URL slug?

A slug is the readable part of a web address that identifies one page. In example.com/blog/how-to-link-aadhaar-with-pan, the slug is how-to-link-aadhaar-with-pan. A good slug tells readers and search engines what the page is about before anyone clicks. Bloggers on WordPress or Blogger, sellers adding product pages and developers building websites all need clean slugs. This slug generator makes one from any title, or hundreds at once if you paste one title per line.

How the slug is made

1. Convert accented letters (é → e, ü → u, ß → ss) (optional)
2. Replace “&” with “and”; drop apostrophes (don’t → dont)
3. Lowercase (optional)
4. Split into words at every space or symbol
5. Remove stop words (a, an, the, of, to, in …) (optional)
6. Join the words with “-” or “_”, then cut to the maximum length at a whole word

Punctuation such as ?, !, :, /, quotes and brackets is removed, and runs of spaces or symbols become a single separator, so you never get double hyphens or a hyphen at the start or end.

Hyphens or underscores?

Google’s Search Central guidance on URL structure recommends hyphens (-) rather than underscores (_) to separate words, because hyphens are treated as word separators. Use underscores only if your system needs them, as some file names or internal identifiers do.

Hindi and other Indian languages

Letters from Devanagari, Tamil, Bengali and other scripts are kept as they are, so “नमस्ते दुनिया” becomes नमस्ते-दुनिया. Such URLs work in browsers, but they get percent-encoded when copied (each Hindi letter turns into several %XX codes), so they end up long and hard to share. For most Indian websites written in English and Hindi, a short English (or romanised Hindi) slug is the more practical choice.

Tips for good slugs

  • Keep it short. Three to six meaningful words are usually enough, and the main keyword should be one of them.
  • Leave out the year unless it matters. You can keep updating a page at best-sip-plans every year, but best-sip-plans-2026 goes out of date.
  • Remove stop words with care. The tool keeps words like “how”, “what” and “why” on purpose, because they often change the meaning.
  • Don’t change a published slug without a 301 redirect from the old address, or existing links and search rankings will break.
  • Use lowercase. Some servers treat /About and /about as different pages, which can create duplicates.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's the last, human-readable part of a page’s address, such as “how-to-apply-for-pan-card” in example.com/blog/how-to-apply-for-pan-card. It identifies the page and tells readers and search engines what it is about.

Hyphens. Google’s URL structure guidance recommends hyphens to separate words. Underscores are fine for file names or systems that require them, but not ideal for page URLs.

Often, yes. It makes slugs shorter without losing meaning: “the-best-way-to-learn-a-new-language” becomes “best-way-learn-new-language”. Keep them when removing them would change or confuse the meaning.

Three to six meaningful words is a good target. There's no fixed rule, but short slugs are easier to read and share. Use the maximum length option to cut long titles at a whole word.

Yes. Paste one title per line and you get one slug per line in the same order. Click “Copy all slugs” to copy them together, for example to paste into a spreadsheet.

Yes. The tool keeps Hindi and other Indian-script letters. Browsers display such URLs fine, but they become long percent-encoded strings when copied or shared, so an English or romanised slug is usually more practical.
