640 × 640 px is the size WhatsApp profile photos are usually kept at.
Corners
WhatsApp and Instagram crop your photo into a circle anyway, so a transparent PNG and a white JPG look the same there. Transparency matters on websites, slides and email signatures.

How to Use

  1. Drop a photo on the box, or tap it and pick one from your gallery.
  2. Choose a Shape: Circle, Rounded corners (set the Corner radius) or Pill. For the last two you can also pick the shape of the picture, such as 1:1 or 16:9.
  3. Drag the photo in the crop area to position your face, and use the Zoom slider (or pinch on a phone) to fill the shape.
  4. Pick an Output size (WhatsApp DP 640 px, LinkedIn 400 px, Instagram 320 px or a custom width) and choose Transparent (PNG) or Solid colour (JPG) corners.
  5. Check the small result preview, then tap Download.

What this circle crop tool does

This circle crop tool crops an image into a circle, or into a rectangle with rounded corners. Drag and zoom to frame your face, pick a size, and download a circle PNG with a transparent background or a JPG with coloured corners. It's handy for a WhatsApp DP, a LinkedIn or Instagram profile photo, an email signature, a resume header or a team page on a website.

Your photo stays on your device: the crop is done by your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Do you need a round photo for WhatsApp?

Not strictly. WhatsApp, Instagram and LinkedIn all show profile photos in a circle on their own, but they cut it from the middle of whatever you upload. Cropping it yourself first lets you decide exactly what sits inside the circle, so your chin or the top of your head isn't lost. A transparent PNG and a JPG with white corners will look the same on these apps. Transparency matters where the photo sits on a coloured page, such as a website, slides or an email signature.

How the crop is calculated

At zoom 1, the tool takes the largest area of the output's shape that fits inside your photo. Zooming in shrinks that area; dragging moves it but never past the edge of the photo.

visible width at zoom z = (largest fitting width) ÷ z
circle radius = output width ÷ 2
rounded corner radius = radius % × (shorter side ÷ 2)
pill radius = shorter side ÷ 2

The chosen area is scaled down in steps for a smooth result, then everything outside the shape is made transparent or filled with your colour.

A worked example

Your phone photo is 3000 × 4000 px and you want a 640 px WhatsApp DP. At zoom 1 the largest square is 3000 × 3000 px. At zoom 2 the square is 1500 × 1500 px, centred where you drag it. That area is scaled to 640 × 640 px and clipped to a circle of radius 320 px. The PNG is usually well under 1 MB.

These platforms resize whatever you upload and can change their display sizes at any time, so treat the numbers as sensible defaults rather than fixed rules. Uploading a slightly larger image is safe.

Tips

  • Keep your face in the middle third of the circle and leave a little space above your head.
  • Use a photo with a plain background. Busy backgrounds look cluttered at small sizes.
  • Need a passport or exam photo instead? Those must be rectangular with exact sizes; use the exam photo resizer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drop your photo, keep the shape on Circle, drag and zoom to frame it, keep Transparent (PNG) selected and tap Download. The area outside the circle is transparent in the PNG.

640 × 640 px is a good choice. WhatsApp shows the photo as a circle and resizes uploads itself, so any square image of about that size looks sharp.

The app you opened it in doesn't show transparency. The corners are still transparent and will look right on a website, in slides or in a document.

Yes. Choose Rounded corners, pick the shape of the picture and move the Corner radius slider. Choose Pill for fully rounded ends on a wide image.

No. The crop happens in your browser and the photo never leaves your device.
