Indian Grading System

Most Indian schools, boards, and universities follow percentage-based grading. The calculator computes your aggregate percentage and maps it to a grade and class.

How Aggregate is Calculated

Aggregate % = Total Marks Obtained ÷ Total Maximum Marks × 100

This correctly handles subjects with different maximum marks (e.g., 50 marks practical + 100 marks theory). The calculator automatically sums both columns before computing the percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Add all marks obtained across subjects, add all maximum marks, then divide: Aggregate % = Total Obtained ÷ Total Maximum × 100. Example: scored 85+76+90+68+72 = 391 out of 500 → 391/500 × 100 = 78.2%. This is what this calculator does automatically. Don't average the subject percentages — that gives a slightly different result when max marks vary.

For CBSE Class 10 and 12: 33 marks per subject (or 33% whichever is applicable). For practical-based subjects, you must pass theory and practical separately. In Class 12, there are 5 main subjects — you must pass all 5. CBSE allows compartment examination if you fail in 1 subject; for 2 or more failures, you must repeat the year.

Criteria vary by institution: most universities award Distinction for 75%+ aggregate. Some require 75% aggregate AND no subject below 60%. A few universities require 80%+ for distinction. Check your specific university's ordinances. This calculator uses the common 75% threshold — verify with your institution.

Many Indian boards and universities have grace mark provisions: CBSE allows up to 5 marks per subject in 2 subjects to help pass. Some state boards give 1–5 grace marks in failed subjects. Universities often award grace marks to round up to the next grade or passing threshold. These marks are typically applied to borderline cases only and are at the institution's discretion.
