What is SWP?

A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) lets you take a fixed amount out of your mutual fund investment at regular intervals, such as every month or every quarter. It's the reverse of a SIP: instead of putting money in each month, you take it out. Retirees like SWPs because they get a regular income while the rest of the corpus stays invested. This SWP calculator shows how long your corpus will last.

How to make the corpus last

For your corpus to last indefinitely, your monthly withdrawal has to be less than the monthly return it earns. Take ₹1 crore at a 9% annual return. That earns ₹75,000 a month. Withdraw less than ₹75,000 a month and the corpus never runs down. In fact, it grows. Withdraw more and it shrinks over time.

How SWP is taxed

  • Each withdrawal from an equity fund counts as a redemption, and capital gains tax applies to the gains part of it.
  • LTCG (held 1+ year): 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25L a year.
  • STCG (held less than 1 year): 20% flat.
  • Debt fund gains are taxed at your income slab rate, however long you held them.

அடிக்கடி கேட்கப்படும் கேள்விகள்

For most retirees with a reasonable corpus, yes, on tax. FD interest is taxed at your slab rate, which is 30% for seniors in the top bracket. SWP redemptions are mostly long-term capital gains, taxed at 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25L. Equity funds can also grow faster than inflation, which may help the corpus last longer. A sensible approach is to split the corpus: some in FDs for stability, the rest in an equity or hybrid fund SWP.

Keep your monthly withdrawal below the monthly return the corpus earns. ₹1 crore at a 9% annual return earns ₹75,000 a month, so withdrawing ₹60,000 a month lets the corpus grow. To stay safe: (1) keep 2–3 years of expenses in an FD, (2) withdraw less in bad market years, (3) rebalance between equity and debt once a year, and (4) raise your withdrawal by the inflation rate, not more.

Each withdrawal sells more units, because the fund's NAV has fallen. Those units are gone for good, so future growth takes a permanent hit. This is called 'sequence of returns risk'. Ways to protect yourself: (1) keep 2 years' expenses in an FD and pause the SWP during a crash, (2) run the SWP from a hybrid or balanced advantage fund, which cuts equity on its own when markets look expensive, and (3) be willing to change how much you withdraw.
