How shoe sizes work in India
Shoes sold in India are labelled in UK sizes, so an "India 8" and a "UK 8" are the same shoe. Problems start when you buy from an international website or a brand that prints only US or EU sizes. This shoe size converter shows the same size in India/UK, US and EU, along with the longest foot that fits, for men, women and kids. A second tab does the same for shirts, trousers and women's tops.
The rules behind the chart
Women: US = UK + 2, EU โ UK + 33
Each full size = 1 barleycorn = โ inch โ 8.5 mm of length
The foot lengths come from the Brannock scale used for US sizes. A man's US 9 fits a foot of up to 10โ inches (26.2 cm), which is India/UK 8 and EU 42. EU sizes are counted in Paris points of โ cm, so they don't line up exactly with UK sizes, and brands round them differently. That is why the same shoe can be labelled EU 42 by one brand and EU 42.5 by another.
| India / UK | US men | US women | EU men | Foot length up to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 6 | 7 | 39 | 23.7 cm |
| 6 | 7 | 8 | 40 | 24.6 cm |
| 7 | 8 | 9 | 41 | 25.4 cm |
| 8 | 9 | 10 | 42 | 26.2 cm |
| 9 | 10 | 11 | 43 | 27.1 cm |
| 10 | 11 | 12 | 44 | 27.9 cm |
How to measure your foot
- Measure in the evening, when your feet are at their largest, wearing the socks you usually wear.
- Stand on a sheet of paper against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure from the wall to the mark.
- Measure both feet and use the longer one.
- Enter the length in the converter. It shows the smallest size your foot fits. If you are between sizes or have wide feet, go up half or one size.
Example: a foot of 25.8 cm is too long for India/UK 7 (25.4 cm), so the converter suggests UK 8, which is US 9 for men and EU 42.
Kids' sizes
Children's sizes run from about UK 3 for babies to UK 13, then start again at UK 1 for older children. US kids' sizes use C (child) and Y (youth). The ages in the chart are rough averages. Children's feet grow fast, so measure every few months and leave about a thumb's width of space at the toe.
Clothing sizes
Men's formal shirts in India are often sold by collar size in cm (38, 40, 42), which matches EU sizing, while casual shirts use S, M, L by chest measurement in inches. Trousers and jeans go by waist in inches. Women's tops and dresses follow UK sizes (8, 10, 12); US sizes are 4 lower and EU sizes 28 higher. Every brand cuts a little differently, so treat these charts as a starting point and check the brand's own chart before ordering online.
