Signature Background Remover

Turn a photo of your signature into a transparent PNG or a form-ready JPG

Your files are processed in your browser. They are never uploaded, and nothing is stored after you close the page. How we handle privacy

For a clean result
  • Sign with a dark pen (black or blue) on plain white paper.
  • Take the photo in daylight or under a bright light.
  • Hold the phone flat above the page so your hand or phone doesn't cast a shadow.
  • Get close so the signature fills most of the photo.

How to Use

  1. Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, then drop a photo or scan of it on the box. On a phone, tap the box and take the photo straight away.
  2. Check the After preview. The checks show the parts that are now transparent. Move the Cleanup strength slider up if grey patches or shadows remain, or down if thin strokes vanish.
  3. Pick an Ink colour (keep original, black or blue), leave Crop to the signature on, and tap Rotate 90ยฐ if the photo is sideways.
  4. Tap Download transparent PNG to use the signature in Word, Google Docs or a PDF.
  5. For an application form, choose a size under White background JPG for forms (or Custom size), tap Make JPG, check the file size and tap Download JPG.

What this signature background remover does

You sign on a sheet of white paper, take a photo with your phone, and this tool removes the paper. What's left is your signature on a transparent background, saved as a PNG. You can place that PNG on a PDF, a Word letter or a rent agreement and it sits on the page like real ink, with no white box around it. If an application form wants a JPG of a fixed size and file size, the tool can also make a white background JPG to match.

Everything happens inside your browser. The photo isn't uploaded anywhere, which matters for something as personal as your signature.

How the background is removed

Each pixel gets a brightness score from its red, green and blue values. Paper is bright, ink is dark, and the Cleanup strength slider sets the line between them.

brightness = 0.299 ร— R + 0.587 ร— G + 0.114 ร— B
brightness โ‰ฅ strength: fully transparent (paper)
brightness โ‰ค strength โˆ’ 40: fully kept (ink)
in between: partly transparent, for a smooth edge

The soft band in between stops the edges of each stroke from looking jagged. After that, the tool finds the smallest box that holds all the ink, adds a small margin (3% of the longer side, at least 4 pixels) and crops to it.

Phone photos taken indoors often show the paper as light grey, not white. That's why Brighten grey paper first is on by default. It looks at the brightest 10% of the photo, treats that as the paper, and scales the whole image so the paper becomes white before cleaning.

A worked example

Say you photograph your signature under a tube light in the evening. The paper reads 160 on the 0 to 255 brightness scale and the ink reads 40. With the strength at 170 and no brightening, the paper falls in the soft band: it stays about 25% visible, so you'd see a grey haze around the signature. With brightening on, every pixel is multiplied by 255 รท 160 = 1.59. The paper becomes 255 and disappears completely, while the ink only rises to about 64, well below 130 (170 โˆ’ 40), so every stroke stays solid.

Sizes for exam and job forms

The JPG size list uses the signature presets from our Exam Photo & Signature Resizer. They are common sizes taken from 2026 notifications. For example, the 2026 IBPS PO and SBI PO notifications ask for a signature of 140 ร— 60 pixels and 10โ€“20 KB. Sizes change from one notification to the next, so always check the current one for your exam. If yours is different, pick Custom size and type in the width, height and maximum KB.

The tool centres your signature on a white canvas of that size, keeps its shape, and lowers the JPG quality step by step until the file fits under the limit. A tiny 140 ร— 60 image can come out smaller than a 10 KB minimum even at top quality. In that case blank comment data is added inside the file to reach the minimum, and the picture itself doesn't change.

Tips for a clean result

  • Use a black or dark blue ball pen or gel pen. Pencil and light blue ink are too faint to separate cleanly from the paper.
  • Use plain white paper. Ruled lines from a notebook will show up as part of the signature.
  • Take the photo in daylight near a window, holding the phone flat above the page so your hand doesn't cast a shadow.
  • Sign the way you normally do. The IBPS and SBI notifications, for example, say signatures in capital letters are not accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sign on plain white paper, take a photo, drop it here and download the transparent PNG. Insert that PNG in Word (Insert > Pictures) or add it to a PDF with our Edit PDF tool. Because the background is transparent, it sits on the page without a white box.

No. The photo is read and cleaned by your own browser on your phone or computer. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and nothing is saved after you close the page.

The paper in that part of the photo is darker than the cleanup setting. Move the Cleanup strength slider up until the patch disappears. If thin strokes start to vanish before the shadow does, retake the photo in daylight with the phone held flat above the page.

Choose the IBPS / SBI signature size (140 ร— 60 px, 10โ€“20 KB) under White background JPG for forms, tap Make JPG and download it. That size comes from the 2026 IBPS PO and SBI PO notifications. Other exams use other sizes, so check your current notification and use Custom size if it differs.

Use whatever your form asks for. The UPSC and IBPS notifications, for example, ask for a signature in black ink, so pick Black for those. Keep original if you want the signature to look exactly as you wrote it.
